Council 1st, 2nd 3rd Readings Dec 12/24 - Malls and Corridors Bylaw component of Housing Accelerator Fund approved 10 story buildings on river corridors.
December 2024 - City is continuing to declare public riverside land surplus for high density housing. New listings continue to be identified.
These are lands that would be keystone to the Master Greenspace Plan currently in development and the National Urban Park Proposal.
City Council voted on Thursday Sept 26/24 to declare public land along the Red River surplus so it can be sold for high density development. The city made a commitment to acquire 1000 acres of additional greenspace, is well into the process of developing a Master Greenspace and Natural Corridors Plan and has received a proposal for a National Urban Park for which these properties are keystones. This is a troubling decision made by the city to sell off land when plans are imminent. Retaining this land for park would be required for the city to meet its own objectives.
Instead of selling riverside natural corridors for development the city should be preserving these lands for the health and well-being of all of its residents.
Ask City Council
1) remove riverside land from surplus properties list and not sell
2) revise criteria for assessing city-owned surplus land to value waterways and natural areas so this doesn't happen again
3) must be a transparent process

OURS-Winnipeg (Outdoor Urban Recreational Spaces – Winnipeg) is a city-wide, community-based, greenspace advocate organization with a focus on urban greenspace, natural and river corridors and the urban forest. Parks, greenspace and natural areas are essential to making Winnipeg an attractive place to live, work and visit. With good planning and care they will be here for generations to come.
OURS continues to urge the City of Winnipeg to initiate consultations for the development of planning documents and policy that preserve and enhance the natural amenities of Winnipeg. OURS-Winnipeg will continue to monitor developments pertaining to and will advocate for good stewardship of our valuable greenspace resources that belong to us all.
The City of Winnipeg needs to develop an urban vision by enacting a Master Plan for Greenspace that reflects the intrinsic cultural, economic and ecological value of our natural assets and that includes:
1. An Urban River Corridor Plan that includes all rivers and streams
2. An Urban Parks Plan
3. A Comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plan and a public and private tree bylaw
4. Accessible green space and natural areas for all
OURS-Winnipeg has consistently called for timely and meaningful public consultations involving a broad participation of citizens prior to any significant planning decisions being taken by the City of Winnipeg.
